When Should You Visit A Podiatrist?

Lower Limb Injury, Pain and Injury Prevention

Podiatrists are foot and lower limb pain specialists: your go-to medical professionals to alleviate pain, aid recovery, and get you back to doing the things you love.

One question we get asked is: Is my foot pain/problem bad enough to see a podiatrist?

“It’s never too early to come see us,” Sophie Walls, our Director and Lead Podiatrist, says. “Seeing a podiatrist early usually means fewer appointments and less time in pain.”

As a general rule of thumb, if an issue has been bugging you for more than a few days, visit a podiatrist.

If you can see a podiatrist in person, do it. And if you can’t due to distance or time, book a Telehealth appointment to get treatment and advice.

General Foot Care

The other core aspect of a podiatrist’s role is overall foot health and happiness.

We often help people with a range of common foot conditions, such as:

  • Podiatrist corn removal
  • Callus removal
  • Cracked heels
  • Podiatrist bunion treatment
  • Fungal toenail infections
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Blisters
  • Damaged nails

And more. Check out our Common Conditions page for a full list of common conditions podiatrists can help with.

Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when some of the toenail turns downwards and presses into the skin, which irritates the skin and causes redness, swelling and warmth. If left untreated, ingrown toenails can become infected, which is just one reason why it’s important to see a podiatrist if an ingrown toenail develops. Our podiatrists at The Ingrown Toenail Clinic know how to properly treat, manage and prevent ingrown toenails through surgical and non-surgical approaches.

Cosmetic Nail Solutions

At Merivale Podiatry we offer specialist cosmetic nail solutions and remodelling. Sometimes, due to fungus, defects or trauma, toenails or nail beds can become damaged and unsightly. While not painful, our clients often feel anxious and distressed about their nails.

We love transforming damaged toenails into beautiful, natural-looking nails and seeing our clients walk out the door with confidence. Our podiatrists use KeryFlex for a painless, in-clinic application of a non-porous resin that allows nails to heal and grow.

Annual Check Up

If you don’t have many issues with your feet, you may never think of visiting a podiatrist. But we recommend seeing a podiatrist for a general annual check-up. Think of it like a WOF for your feet: a great opportunity to tidy up callous and corns, get your toenails checked and trimmed, ask any questions you might have about your feet and lower limbs, and give your feet some TLC.

We recommend that those with diabetes see a podiatrist at least once a year to maintain your foot health and prevent complications from diabetes from arising or address any issues early on.

Whether you’re after ingrown toe nail treatments, custom orthotic services or bunion removals, our experienced team is here to help.
